In a recent position paper, the Mouvement Ecologique put forward concrete proposals for implementing a central provision of the new legislation on waste.

Over 35 years ago, Mouvement Ecologique introduced the sticker “No Advertising, Please.” According to estimates, over 50% of private mailboxes used such a sticker, preventing approximately 23,600 trees from being cut down over the years.

It is already clear that the 2024 Autofestival, which started this weekend, will (once again) feature ever larger, ever heavier cars. This also applies to electric cars. This government set out to drive forward the energy transition and therefore also electromobility with more socially selective subsidies, among other things.

Advertising may only be distributed to households in Luxembourg from January 2024 if residents expressly express this wish by placing a corresponding sticker on their letterbox. The Mouvement Ecologique expressly welcomes this change, as well as the fact that the post office is providing households with ready-made stickers for this purpose.

The government has decided not to extend the increased subsidies (“top up”) in the energy sector (renewable energies, refurbishments, etc.) under the “Solidarity Pact 2.0”, which expire at the end of the year.

The use of pesticides harms people’s health and destroys nature. It is largely responsible for the dramatic decline in insect and bee populations. In Luxembourg, all residents – regardless of where they live – are exposed to pesticides. A situation that should no longer be acceptable to anyone.

The coalition agreement of the new government includes a range of instruments in the various areas of sustainable development. This is to be welcomed. However, there are fundamental unanswered questions about the government’s basic orientation and prioritisation as well as the concrete implementation in practice.

Together with eight organisations, the Mouvement Ecologique has called on the future government to take concrete measures to preserve forests and regulate hunting. A crisis summit is to be organised with all stakeholders, to which hunters’ representatives should also be invited.

The opinion research institute ILRES, on behalf of the Mouvement Ecologique, conducted a representative survey of 1012 residents between 27 September and 4 October 2023. The survey covered people aged 16 and over living in Luxembourg. Of these, 59.4% had Luxembourg nationality.

Since the first ban on conventional incandescent lamps in 2009, the EU has gradually banned other energy-intensive light sources. These are now largely being replaced by LEDs. The Mouvement Ecologique, as well as the Council for Sustainable Development, were invited to participate in an exchange with representatives of the CSV and DP delegations in Senningen on Monday, October 16, as part of the coalition talks.
