Resisting the Temptation of “Flexibilisation” in EU Climate Policy – MECO Supports Two CAN Europe Initiatives

In Brussels, the buzzword in recent months seems to be “flexibilisation”, which unfortunately must be understood as a growing trend towards deregulation or the questioning of objectives and policies aimed at making the Union more sustainable. This is often justified by the supposedly “irrefutable” arguments of sovereignty and competitiveness of the Union.

After the “Omnibus” package, which aimed to reduce the responsibilities of large companies in supply chains (CSDD), climate targets are now being challenged, with discussions of new tools that claim to help achieve these targets without actually decarbonising the European economy — such as the inclusion of carbon credits from outside the EU or still highly immature carbon capture technologies. It is essential to maintain an ambitious and determined European climate policy.

It is in this context that MECO supports the initiatives launched by its partner organisation CAN Europe: signing a letter prepared by CAN Europe and addressed to the European Commission, and drafting a specific letter jointly written with ASTM and addressed to Environment Minister Serge Wilmes.
