From 2026, 70 per cent of new cars purchased in Luxembourg would have to be electric vehicles, in line with the National Climate and Energy Plan, if we are to meet our climate protection targets. However, we are a long way from that! Up until May, electric vehicles accounted for only around 30 per cent of new cars. In other words: far below what is absolutely necessary.

The Mouvement Ecologique believes that the current public debate is focusing too heavily on short-term measures aimed at providing immediate relief.
The draft law on the “Klimabonus Wunnen”, which provides financial support for heat pumps, building renovations and other measures promoting the energy transition, was recently adopted by the Chamber of Deputies.
The current heatwaves clearly demonstrate how important such legislation and the accompanying financial resources are. They also highlight the urgent need for a far more coherent climate protection and climate adaptation policy, particularly for people with limited financial means, who are especially vulnerable to the impacts of extreme heat.

As a reminder, Google has been planning to build a data centre in Bissen for many years. For years, water cooling was planned, with Google refusing to publish concrete data. It was said that water consumption would represent around 10-15% of Luxembourg’s total water supply, which was considered unacceptable, notably by the Mouvement Ecologique.
