The European Union dangerously weakens protection rules: Mouvement Ecologique joins an international mobilisation
Mouvement Ecologique is supporting a call launched by more than 470 organisations, trade unions and collectives from across Europe and the world.
Together, the collective denounces the massive deregulation promoted by the European Commission and supported by several Member States.
Under the pretext of “administrative simplification”, the EU is pursuing a path that directly threatens the rules protecting:
- the environment and the climate,
- public health and food safety,
- social and labour rights,
- data protection and privacy,
- and more broadly, European democracy.
While these rules are already too often poorly enforced, they now risk being hollowed out or dismantled altogether. This rollback endangers the ecological and social transition – at a time when the climate crisis and rising inequalities demand stronger and faster action. Behind these measures lies a logic of deregulation that grants more power to large corporations, while marginalising actors working for the common good and shrinking democratic space.
Our rights and our future are not for sale!
Mouvement Ecologique, together with its European and international partners, affirms:
- that the rules protecting people, the planet and democracy must be strengthened, not weakened;
- that citizens, civil society and trade unions must be at the heart of the European democratic process;
- that the EU must assume its responsibility to guarantee an ecological, social and solidarity-based transition, respectful of human rights.
In a context marked by climate emergency, biodiversity loss and growing inequalities, weakening our protections is a historic mistake. Mouvement Ecologique therefore calls for resistance against this deregulation and for the defence of a Europe that protects present and future generations.
