Sign The European Citizens’ Initiative : “Tax the Rich”!

The world is becoming increasingly unfair! A small group of super-rich people are amassing billion after billion, while 700 million people live in extreme poverty:

  • The wealth of the five richest men has doubled since 2020, while at the same time five billion people have become poorer;
  • It is also known that while the super-rich are particularly fueling the climate crisis with their excessive lifestyles, poorer people in particular are already losing their livelihoods due to the climate crisis.

It can’t go on like this! We must take action together now before our society breaks down as a result of this injustice. This is why a Europe-wide “Tax the Rich” initiative has been launched!

The demand of “Tax the Rich”: a European wealth tax for the super-rich!

  • The wealth tax should not apply to normal incomes, but to multimillionaires with assets of over five million US dollars (around 4.6 million euros).
  • With a graduated tax rate of 2 to 3% for millionaires and 5% for billionaires, the tax would generate an estimated 285.6 billion euros in revenue for the entire EU.
  • This money is urgently needed to finance important projects in the areas of climate protection, health promotion and better education in Europe, but also in the countries of the South. The countries of the South in particular, which are suffering the most from the climate change we have caused, need financial resources to overcome the climate crisis.

To give these demands a chance of being implemented, a “European Citizens’ Initiative” was launched (ECI). If one million signatures are collected within a year and a certain quorum of signatures is reached in seven countries, the European Commission will have to address the issue and, if necessary, take a new legislative initiative.

The tax on the super-rich has already proved its worth in some EU countries!

Experience in France, Norway, Spain and Switzerland shows that a wealth tax is both practicable and worthwhile. Despite the introduction of this tax, very few millionaires have moved their assets or companies abroad. The states’ additional income exceeded these losses. And by the way: there are efficient instruments to combat the feared tax evasion due to the introduction of a wealth tax, e.g. through an “exit tax”, in which the emigration of tax evaders is taxed and is therefore far less “attractive”. Another option would be to link tax liability to nationality, as is the case in the USA. This would mean that all citizens, regardless of their place of residence, would be obliged to pay wealth tax.

Sign the petition and make the world a little fairer!

Support the petition and raise your voice for more social justice. Together we can make a difference and help to create a fairer tax system. Every signature counts and brings us one step closer to a fair Luxembourg and a fairer Europe. Anyone eligible to vote can take part in the petition. For Luxembourg, this means people aged 18 and over. All Luxembourg residents are counted for the Luxembourg contribution. You too can contribute to the success of the campaign! Sign the official petition to the EU now so that we reach the 4,500 signatures needed from Luxembourg.

The success of the initiative also depends on Luxembourg!

According to EU rules, 1 million signatures must be collected for this initiative throughout the EU. This until October 2024! And in parallel, 7 EU countries must achieve a fixed quorum. For Luxembourg, this quorum is just under 4,500 signatures! A goal that should actually be easy to achieve. Therefore, contribute to our success by making Luxembourg one of the decisive 7 countries! Luxembourg thus has an impact that extends far beyond the country’s borders.
