Outcome of the EU elections: ‘New Parliament – Same Planet’
The Mouvement Ecologique has been approached several times about its analysis of the results of the European elections.
This can be summarized as follows:
- The fact is that the parties that recognize the climate crisis and, albeit less explicitly, the biodiversity crisis, will continue to represent the majority in the future European Parliament! The far-right and populist parties, which deny the facts of environmental policy, are in the minority despite the shift to the right.
- It is also a fact that – as the European colleagues from ‘Can Europe (Climate Action Network) put it: New Parliament – Same Planet – the composition of the EU Parliament does not change the facts. Natural laws are not negotiable and do not depend on elections. And the climate and biodiversity crises are undeniable facts: addressing them consistently must be a political priority at the EU level. The greater the responsibility of the majority parties in parliament!
- Another fact that must increasingly come into focus is that social justice and ecological transition must go hand in hand: we need a ‘new social and green deal’. Distributive justice, taking people with fewer financial resources with us in the transition… are essential for shaping the future of the EU. In doing so, positive future prospects must be presented.
- It is all the more important that the member states also pursue responsible policies. The fact that certain subsidies in the energy sector will expire at the end of June in Luxembourg and that it is still not known what the further aid will look like in detail is a false signal. The governing parties ran on the slogan that they wanted to make subsidies in the environmental sector more socially selective. The fact that, less than a month before certain subsidies are due to expire, it is still not known what is meant by this is unacceptable. The fact that there has been no open discussion of possible options is also highly problematic. This is not the way to build trust in the current political system.
