EU law disregarded, biodiversity at risk: Amendments to the reform text of the Nature Conservation Act are essential

The government wants to make progress in housing policy – but one of the first actions in the government project ‘Méi a méi séier bauen’ is to weaken the nature conservation law. The current draft of the law raises many questions.

After a thorough analysis, the Mouvement Ecologique concludes that the draft law in its current form

  • is not based on verifiable (especially scientific) foundations,
  • does not comply with the nature conservation directives of the European Union,
  • could jeopardise the principle of equality of all citizens before the law,
  • will lead to a loss of biodiversity and quality of life in our towns and communities,
  • is not able to achieve the government’s promised goal of simplifying administration and accelerating procedures in housing policy.

The Mouvement Ecologique emphasises the need to simplify procedures – a position it has held for years. However, the necessary reform of the Nature Conservation Act must imperatively comply with EU directives and preserve biodiversity and quality of life in our localities.

For this reason, the Mouvement Ecologique – in a constructive approach – has also developed a series of concrete proposals for change in its detailed analysis.

The decline in biodiversity not only leads to the disappearance of numerous species and natural habitats, but also affects the quality of life of us all and future generations.

Therefore, Mouvement Ecologique is making an urgent appeal to the government to make substantial changes to the draft law.
