Constant growth: a fallacy, no alternative or are there “new future visions“ after all?

When: On Thursday, 29th February at 8 pm
Where: Hotel Parc Belle-Vue, 5, av. Marie-Thérèse, Luxembourg

Modification: A highly interesting moderated exchange with Mathias Binswanger, one of the most important economists from Switzerland: Thursday, February 29th at 8:00 PM at the Parc Belle-Vue Hotel in the city. It was intended to have an exchange between Mathias Binswanger and Ulrike Herrmann. Ulrike Herrmann canceled at short notice, so the exchange will be with Mathias Binswanger. Mathias Binswanger is one of the most successful economists from Switzerland. He focuses intensively on the interactions between money, happiness, and the economy. His recent book „Der Wachstumszwang – Warum die Volkswirtschaft immer weiter wachsen muss, selbst wenn wir genug haben“ ( “The Growth Imperative – Why the economy must continue to grow even when we have enough” ) is highly acclaimed.

In his contribution, he will address:

– Why our current economic system depends on growth
– The consequences of the model at various levels
– The solutions he sees.

He will also draw interesting parallels between Switzerland and Luxembourg. Do we always need more companies and people? Are the consequences adequately considered? And how to deal with them.

Mathias Binswanger looks forward to discussing realistic solutions based on today’s growth principle. It continues to be highly interesting.

Mathias Binswanger is one of the most influential economists in Switzerland. He is a professor of economics at the University of Applied Sciences North-East Switzerland, a private lecturer at the University of St. Gallen, a visiting professor at Qingdao University of Technology in China and at the Banking University in Saigon (Vietnam), author of various books (including “Die Tretmühlen des Glücks”, “Sinnlose Wettbewerbe – Warum wir immer mehr Unsinn produzieren”, “Der Wachstumszwang”). His thesis can be roughly summarised as follows: „Is it possible for today’s economies to operate over the long run without growth? An in-depth analysis of the economic monetary cycle shows that this is not possible in the long term. Modern economies cannot function without growth in gross domestic product, as they would otherwise fall into a downward spiral.“

The conference will be held in German, but will be simultaneously translated into English
