Toys and Children’s Items: Better to Share Than Throw Away

Every year, huge amounts of toys are purchased – and many of them are quickly discarded. Statistics show that many toys are used for less than 8 months or disappear into the attic for years before ending up in the trash. Yet many of these toys could easily be reused. When it comes to electronic toys, there’s also the risk of forgotten batteries leaking and rendering the toys unusable. Estimates suggest that around 50% of toys could be donated or recycled.

Our fixit! tip: In Luxembourg, various associations, social initiatives, and resource centers are committed to giving toys and children’s items a second life. You can drop off well-preserved items – and other families or organizations working with children can benefit from them. Here are a few examples:

TABA (Comité National de Défense Sociale)
Butzebuttik (CIGL Differdingen)
Ligue HMC, Capellen
• On Facebook there are dedicated groups for the re-sale of toys for example Kannerwelt vun de Spillsaachen an villes méi or Spillsaachen second hand
• Also many local resource centers collect toy’s and other kid’s items – feel free to ask there !
