New wildflower seed mixes in our shop: September is the perfect time to sow colourful meadows and flower strips!

The ‘Wëllplanzesom Lëtzebuerg’ range of seed mixes and perennials is the perfect way to create a garden that is close to nature, welcoming to pollinators and climate-resilient. Autumn brings the ideal weather conditions for sowing your meadow or a flower strip.

Wild plants are usually hardier than cultivated varieties and often withstand adverse conditions, such as periods of drought. Another particular advantage is that the diverse composition of the ‘Wëllplanzesom’ seed mixes (up to 48 species!) ensures that something is almost always in bloom. If you follow certain guidelines when establishing and maintaining your garden, nothing will stand in the way of creating your very own local natural paradise!

From the cracks in the garage driveway, to the sun-exposed, dry front garden, right through to larger meadows and shadier corners – there’s something for everywhere.

Fancy getting started? Then get stuck in with the freshly arrived seed mixes from ‘Wëllplanzesom Lëtzebuerg’. The coming weeks in September are the ideal time to sow! Start preparing the soil now (the turf needs to be broken up) so that you can sow the mixture before any forecast rain. This will allow the seeds to germinate well, ensuring a burst of colour come next spring!

LUX Shade Border (LUX-Schattsaum):

To brighten up shady spots under trees, along walls or in areas sheltered from the sun by the house – this mix contains flowers that bloom early and later in the season. The little wood anemone brings splashes of white to the garden early in spring, whilst other plants are still virtually in hibernation. Later in the season, various carnations, cranesbills and bellflowers add touches of pink to lilac. A perfect mix that brings a touch of woodland edge to your garden and enhances dark corners for pollinators too.

All seed packets are uniformly filled to cover an area of 25 square metres.

Which mix is best suited to your location?

Depending on the location, soil type, sun exposure and the level of effort you wish to put into planting and maintenance, different mixtures are recommended.

How can you buy the seed mixtures?

You can purchase the seed mixes from our shop (Oekozenter Pafendall, 6 rue Vauban, L-2663 Luxembourg, Mon–Fr 8.00–12.00 pm; 02.00 – 4.30 pm) or have them sent by post (plus postage).

As well as seed mixes, ‘Wëllplanzesom Lëtzebuerg’ also offers perennials. These are ideal for complementing your existing flowerbeds or for planting in pots on your balcony. The pretty quaking grass, known in Luxembourg as ‘Wibbeldewapp’, is simply a joy to behold – we can highly recommend it! Of course, there’s nothing to stop you from creating entirely new flowerbeds consisting exclusively of wild perennials; the range includes over 40 species in a wide variety of colours, sizes and growing conditions. This is another way you can make an aesthetic contribution to nature conservation in your own home – a delight for both the eye and the bees.

A quick side note: one advantage of wild plants is that they self-seed. Cultivated varieties are often sterile and do not produce any seeds at all. So the population of wild plants will grow over time. You’ll notice that some species thrive better in your garden than others; this is a natural process – whether you choose to actively prevent it or let the ‘survival of the fittest’ principle take its course is entirely up to you…

Local produce for biodiversity – wild plants from Luxembourg

All seed mixes from ‘Wëllplanzesom Lëtzebuerg’ consist of 100 per cent plant species that also grow wild in the countryside here. That’s why they’re perfect for encouraging bumblebees, butterflies and the like. With these mixes, you can do your bit for nature conservation right at home.
