20 million euros of public money for new greenhouses: the move towards large-scale facilities and the lack of sustainability criteria cast a shadow over the initiative to increase fruit and vegetable growing in Luxembourg

In the context of the first ‘Lëtzebuerger Geméisbaudag’ organised by the Ministry of Agriculture, which will take place tomorrow, Thursday 16 January, the Mouvement Ecologique has taken a stand on a recent bill proposed by the Ministry of Agriculture to promote vegetable and fruit greenhouses. The title of the statement is:

20 million euros of public money for new greenhouses: the move towards large-scale facilities and the lack of sustainability criteria cast a shadow over the initiative to increase fruit and vegetable growing in Luxembourg“.

In our opinion, the way the draft law is designed does not sufficiently promote small-scale Luxembourg agriculture, but rather larger industrial farms. Furthermore, the ecological aspects of the cultivation criteria are only marginally addressed. This view also seems to be reflected in the conference programme of the ‘Lëtzebuerger Geméisdag’, which takes place at the “Lycée technique agricole” in Gilsdorf.

What strategy to promote vegetable production?

The Lëtzebuerger Landesuebstbauveräin responded to the statement from the Mouvement Ecologique, which in turn prompted a response from the Mouvement Ecologique.
