EU elections The major challenges in the area of sustainable development at European level: What is at stake on 9 June 2024?

On Thursday, 2 may at 8 pm at the Hotel Parc Belle-Vue, 5, av. Marie-Thérèse, Luxembourg

Simultaneous translation will be provided

On 9 June 2024, we will elect a new EU Parliament. The importance of the European work for our country is enormous. An estimated 80% of Luxembourg’s laws are strongly influenced by EU decisions. Nevertheless, in Luxembourg, it is often not known exactly what position our government will take in EU negotiations and what exact regulations will be advocated. This is only reported after the event. Parliament is also only involved to a limited extent. The work of EU parliamentarians is discussed somewhat more frequently, but rarely characterises the discussions. Yet the direction of EU policy is of crucial importance, especially in times of current geopolitical tensions, the challenges of the climate and biodiversity crisis, far-right tendencies and much
more.

With the 2021 Green Deal, the EU has set itself ambitious and legally binding targets to reduce emissions by 55 per cent by 2030 and achieve climate neutrality by 2050. Instruments for efficient energy use, the circular economy, sustainable agriculture, the restoration of biodiversity and much more have been defined. Objectives that will also contribute to the creation of jobs in future-oriented economic sectors.

And yet: there is a feeling that – under the influence of powerful lobbies – these noble goals are now being called into question. With this conference, the Mouvement Ecologique would like to address the major challenges facing the EU in the coming years from a sustainability perspective and put forward positive proposals for discussion. • What major decisions need to be made at EU level in the next few years?

• What course should be set in the areas of nature conservation, mobility, resource conservation, the climate crisis and agriculture ….?
• What would be the steps towards a socio-ecological orientation of economic policy?
• What could a democratic, transparent and fair Europe look like? What initiatives need to be taken?
