Funding problems at Friends of the Earth International – solidarity matters
Friends of the Earth International, the global alliance of which the Mouvement Ecologique is a member, is facing a very difficult financial situation following the cut of €1.2 million in public funding by the government of Geert Wilders. This cut is part of a broader trend of reducing funding for NGOs, both in the Netherlands, in Europe, and elsewhere — weakening the work of these organizations and negatively impacting civil society.
Coordinating national “Friends of the Earth” groups around the world, FOE International plays a key role in supporting efforts for climate and social justice in the Global South. The elimination of co-financing opportunities for programs in these countries would have a dramatic “snowball effect” on a large number of national organizations.
An Extraordinary General Assembly was held on June 30, aiming to find a joint solution to maintain activities and continue financing international programs — through significant budget cuts, exceptional use of reserves, and partial reorganization. By maintaining a strong core of activity, Friends of the Earth is increasingly relying on fundraising to stabilize its finances.
As the Luxembourg representative of Friends of the Earth, Mouvement Ecologique took part in this General Assembly and expresses its solidarity with the parent organization.
