Extreme Heatwaves – Tackling the Root Causes

The intense heatwaves of recent weeks have placed considerable strain on our society.

The Mouvement Ecologique believes that the current public debate is focusing too heavily on short-term measures aimed at providing immediate relief.

While such measures are important, they are not enough. In our view, it is essential to address the root causes of the problem:

• Firstly, much more determined action must be taken to tackle the climate crisis. As the figures presented in the attached position paper show, Luxembourg is unfortunately still far from achieving its climate targets.
• Secondly, the planning and design of our towns, villages and buildings must be fundamentally rethought so that they are better adapted to increasing heat. Creating isolated “cool islands” in schools and other locations alone will not be sufficient.
