Car festival 2025: List of energy-efficient electric cars on Oekotopten.lu: The selection of efficient electric cars has never been so large.

The world of automobiles will be in the spotlight again in 2025 with the Autofestival in Luxembourg. The internet portal www.oekotopten.lu is once again shining a spotlight on electric models this year, because only these can be operated in a climate-friendly way using renewable energies. But how do the current models actually perform in terms of energy efficiency and energy consumption? What has happened on the market?
Many models eligible for a bonus – but watch out for consumption
The range of electric cars has continued to grow. This is confirmed by a glance at the list of oekotopten.lu models. These are vehicles whose power consumption per 100 km does not exceed 16 kWh (4 seats), 18 kWh (5 seats) or 28 kWh (7 seats or more), depending on the number of seats. So there are no power guzzlers among them. It is all the more pleasing that this year’s list includes over 100 models. This shows that from compact city cars to SUVs and sporty luxury cars, almost all manufacturers now have a wide range of electric cars on offer. What’s more, state subsidies of up to €3,000 to €6,000 are available for all the models listed. To qualify for the subsidy, cars with seven to nine seats must not consume more than 20 kWh/100 km and must not exceed the maximum power of 150 kW.
Minimum consumption and maximum range?
The consumption figures given in the list and in advertisements are based on purely theoretical values (WLTP procedure), which are known to differ from actual consumption. This is because the equipment of the car, the driving style and external factors such as road conditions and the weather play an important role here.
However, you may come across advertisements that boast maximum range but at the same time only state the minimum consumption (even if only in small print). Always check with the dealer or on the internet for the exact average consumption and range. If you are configuring a new car, be sure to check for options (wheels, heavier equipment, etc.) that may affect range and fuel consumption.
Thanks to efficient battery technology and optimised aerodynamics, some new models may appear to be slightly more efficient than previous generations. However, there have been few improvements in power consumption. Some vehicles now offer ranges of over 600 kilometres, which inevitably goes hand in hand with larger batteries. More and more manufacturers are using raw materials, some of which are recycled or renewable, in vehicle production, but this should not obscure the fact that cars still have a large ‘ecological backpack’.
When buying oversized and therefore heavy bodies, buyers should therefore think twice about whether they really need a large electric car and long ranges.
Do we need anything new at all?
Interesting from the point of view of resource conservation – financial support of €1,500 can be applied for by older electric cars that are at least three years old. Even if older electric cars do not meet today’s efficiency standards, they can still offer a cheaper and more environmentally friendly alternative to new models if used responsibly, since their production alone has already consumed a lot of resources and e-cars should therefore be used for as long as possible. Furthermore, electric cars can only be one element of sustainable mobility: They cannot solve the problem of overburdened infrastructures, microplastics caused by tyre abrasion, daily traffic jams, or the depletion of resources, to name just a few.
