Promoting organic farming, biodiversity, climate protection and health prevention

calling for a rethink of politics and questioning the dominance of today’s market mechanisms

There is currently pressure from various quarters on the Ministry of Education to relax the criteria for the procurement of food in school canteens. The intention is to give less importance to products produced organically abroad.

If this were to happen, it would not only have an extremely negative impact on the development of organic farming in Luxembourg, but it would also be highly questionable from the point of view of health care, the preservation of biodiversity, climate protection and, ultimately, the government’s credibility on environmental issues.

With its organic and locally oriented purchasing policy, Restopolis has succeeded in creating significant added value for Luxembourg’s agricultural sector (both organic and conventional). This success story must be continued.

The fact that such setbacks are even up for discussion is also due to the fact that the Minister for Agriculture and Consumer Protection is not exactly consistent in her support for organic farming, as several examples show. According to the demands of the Mouvement Ecologique, she should, among other things, extend the good example set by Restopolis to all public canteens (e.g. hospitals and nursing homes), finally present a progressive organic action plan and strengthen the structures within the ministry to promote organic farming.

Last but not least, Mouvement Ecologique addresses the role of a market-dominating company in Luxembourg in the distribution and processing of food. Its dominant position in this sector has consequences for Luxembourg’s agriculture and food supply and must also be addressed in policy-making.
