The Luxembourg government is glossing over the climate record and delaying the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions: Climate protection must finally become a government priority!
Recently, the Luxembourg Ministry of the Environment published the provisional climate emissions balance for 2024.
They clearly show that emissions in key sectors are far too high: for example, CO2 emissions in industry have even risen by 21% since 2005 and would therefore need to be reduced by 66% by 2030. In other sectors, such as buildings and wastewater treatment, major efforts are also required to cut emissions by 45% and 37%, respectively, by 2030.
The figures reveal a very alarming situation, and the response of the government in general, and the Ministry of the Environment in particular, is extremely unsatisfactory.
By 2030, i.e. in less than 4.5 years, very significant reductions would therefore have to be achieved (-65% in industry, -45% in the building sector). An absolutely untenable situation! When the government in general and the ministry in particular pretend that this highly problematic situation could be resolved through accounting tricks – measures of this kind have been announced by the Ministry of the Environment – they are deliberately ignoring the necessary climate protection targets as well as binding law!
Mouvement Ecologique calls on the government to act decisively in order to implement the necessary measures that ensure a real reduction of greenhouse gas emissions in all sectors and a gradual transformation of existing structures.
