CSV MEPs – Shame on you!

On Wednesday, 9 July, Luxembourg’s CSV MEPs Martine Kemp and Isabel Wiseler-Lima ultimately voted against consistent climate protection by de facto supporting the position of the extreme right – the “Patriots for Europe” – in the EU Parliament! The vote by the CSV MEPs is unacceptable for future generations, but also from a democratic point of view. As a reminder, the “Patriots for Europe” clearly include far-right parties such as the “Rassemblement National” in France and the “Fidesz” party of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, among others.

What is this about? In November, the climate protection conference in Brazil, which is considered extremely important by all environmental organisations, will take place. The EU wants to be climate neutral by 2050 – to achieve this goal, clear interim targets must be defined in the Climate Act. According to the current status, climate plans are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 90% by 2040 compared to 1990 levels. These are actually supposed to be available by September. Other important aspects are also under discussion, such as whether the EU can achieve its targets to a small extent through climate protection projects in third countries by means of certificates.

On Wednesday of this week, the “Patriots for Europe” seized control of the negotiations for this important climate protection law in an internal procedure and are now taking the lead on this important dossier. This means that they will largely determine the timetable and draft the Parliament’s position. They are not hiding their intentions. On the contrary, they are climate deniers, opponents of the law and want to bring it down in its current form. It is enough for them to delay the work until after the climate conference in Brazil.

If they succeed, this would in all likelihood be a dramatic setback for global climate protection policy!

Yesterday, the Green, Socialist and Liberal parliamentary groups attempted to circumvent the influence of the patriots and prevent the worst by means of an “urgent procedure”.

After all, there is no denying that this is an urgent matter. The climate conference is less than four months away!

It is completely incomprehensible and unacceptable that the European People’s Party, including Luxembourg’s MEPs, voted almost unanimously against the urgent motion! Martine Kemp of the CSV said in an interview with Radio 100.7 that there was no “urgency” and that normal democratic procedures had to be respected.

The Mouvement Ecologique finds the stance taken by Luxembourg’s CSV MEPs shameful. Instead of questioning the urgency of the matter, they should have done everything in their power to convince their EU colleagues from other countries to vote in favour (300 MEPs voted in favour of the motion, 379 against, with 8 abstentions).

, the Luxembourg CSV MEPs effectively supported right-wing extremists and climate deniers!

“I urge you to support this motion. And when you press the vote button, don’t think about internal parliamentary or party politics, but about the future victims of floods, droughts, forest fires and heat waves, said Renew MEP Gerben-Jan Gerbrandy. The Luxembourg CSV MEPs decided otherwise.

Let us hope that, like progressive forces that take the climate crisis seriously, the EU Parliament will immediately resume dialogue with the Commission on a good climate protection law and that the European People’s Party – and the Luxembourg representatives will show their colours and vote for climate protection and against right-wing extremism in mid-September, when another vote on an urgent procedure is likely to take place!

It will also be interesting to see what position CSV Environment Minister Serge Wilmes takes and to what extent the CSV gives  its MEPs a clear mandate in this regard.
