Against fossil imperialism: for solidarity, international law and climate protection
Together with 125 other environmental organisations, Mouvement Ecologique supports the appeal by Friends of the Earth Europe to stop the new ‘fossil’ imperialism and show solidarity with the peoples of Venezuela and Greenland.
Current developments, including threats against Greenland, interventions in Latin America to secure fossil resources, and increasing political and economic pressure on the European Union, raise fundamental questions about compliance with international law, democratic principles and international climate commitments.
Particularly critical is the attempt to weaken European climate and environmental standards in favour of US fossil fuel ‘energy dominance’. The expansion of imports of US liquefied natural gas (LNG) jeopardises European climate targets, increases energy prices for households and creates new dependencies instead of strengthening Europe’s long-term energy sovereignty. In addition, considerable ecological and health damage is known to occur in the production regions.
The appeal underlines the need to show solidarity with the affected regions – especially in Latin America and with the population of Greenland – and to take a clear European position against fossil fuel imperialism. A credible response can only lie in the consistent implementation of the European Green Deal, the gradual phase-out of fossil fuels and the expansion of energy efficiency, sufficiency and renewable energies.
