Joint campaign against the deregulation of pesticide legislation
In response to an appeal by the Pesticide Action Network Europe , the Mouvement Ecologique, together with natur&ëmwelt and Greenpeace , sent a detailed letter to EU Commissioner Christophe Hansen, the Luxembourg MEPs and the national ministries of health, environment and agriculture at the beginning of December.
In it, the environmental organisations call on them to take a clear stand against the planned, highly problematic changes in the so-called “Omnibus” proposal on food and feed safety.
The Omnibus is an EU legislative package that aims to change several regulations at once – ostensibly for the sake of “simplification”. However, in the current draft, this would lead to massive deregulation in the pesticide sector: among other things, dangerous active substances could be approved indefinitely (currently, they must be re-evaluated every few years on the basis of the latest scientific findings to protect health and the environment), important scientific re-evaluations could be omitted, and transition periods for use could be extremely extended despite bans already in place. This would drastically weaken the protection of citizens, the environment, biodiversity and, in particular, children and farmers.
Mouvement Ecologique and its partner organisations make it clear: the population demands and needs more protection from pesticides, not less. That is why they are determined to ensure that the EU and national governments stop this fatal regression.
You will find the the detailed letters (french) in the downlaods.
